Plan of adult play center for Carlisle withdrawn after opposition
Plans for an adult play center in Carlisle were withdrawn after months of opposition.
The applicant, who is listed as Intervision, is based in Leicester and submitted plans for an adult play center at 70-72 English Street in November.
The company said its “mission” was to provide innovative and entertaining products for gamers that drive revenue growth for customers and that Carlisle had been identified as a location they had designated to be part of a large. expansion.
They said: “We are currently researching locations in the Midlands, North and South of England and hope to open five per year.
“This unit is centrally located in Carlisle, and has access to local transportation and amenities. Carlisle was chosen because there is / was the residences of William Hill, Coral, Gala, Ladbrokes.”
Perhaps worryingly, they also said, “Unfortunately, due to the poor perception of the game, it was difficult to get a site with the required planning permission.”
Indeed, the prospect of an adult gaming arcade – whose owners want it to be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week – has sparked unease.
Last November, a House of Lords report said gambling was affecting the lives of two million Britons, with around 300,000 people being addicted and families suffering from it.
The panel behind the report concluded that they would recommend that ministers impose a tax on gambling operators to fund NHS addiction treatment.
Malcolm Ward, a licensed insurance broker and Carlisle businessman, had urged locals to oppose the plan at the time and referred to the Lords report.
“It does not do anything to believe that there is a planning demand before Carlisle City Council to turn 70-72 English St in Carlisle into an adult video game room,” Ward said when the plan was rolled out. been submitted for the first time.
“I don’t see why we should have a huge playroom in the center of our attractive city. It will reduce its image and be of no use to our city.”
He added, “Problem gambling can have a huge impact. It can destroy entire families.
