Mod Makes Halo’s Master Chief A Yakuza Enforcer
The Tokyo of the 1980s—the glitz, the glamour, the excesses of the post-war economic miracle, the… genetically engineered super soldier of 2551?
Modder Kashiiera on Nexus Mods (opens in a new tab) swapped one in-game sex symbol for another, replacing Yakuza 0’s sentient hunk Kiryu with Halo’s sentient hunk, Master Chief Petty Officer John 117. With a simple model swap, you can now brutalize thugs, teach important life lessons, and unravel the mystery of the empty lot like a 7-foot-tall, one-ton killing machine from the 26th century.

Kashiiera specializes in modding the Master Chief Collection (opens in a new tab), by mixing and matching resources and cards from the different games in the pack. Their other projects let you play all of the later Halo games with Combat Evolved’s weapons and HUD. (opens in a new tab)for example, or transplant weapons and vehicles (opens in a new tab) from Halo Reach to Halo 3.
The modder used this expertise to hack Mister Chief’s Halo 3 character model in Yakuza 0 into playable form. They also seem to have tried wearing the Arbiter the same way, but its knobby alien proportions make for a less clean transition, and so far Kashiiera has only one. short demonstration of the idea on Twitter (opens in a new tab).
Honestly, the Chief fits in pretty well in Yakuza – it’s already such a fun and absurd adventure, and you get the added bonus of seeing the stoic warrior-to-be clubbing and doing karaoke. It’s so much better than watching him make love (opens in a new tab).
