Lions drop two games in Saturday’s MPSF invite
BERKELEY, Calif .– LMU lost two games on Saturday on Day 2 of the MPSF Invitational. The Lions opened the day with a 13-8 loss to UC San Diego before being barely edged out by UC Irvine, 13-12.
Game 1: UC San Diego 13, # 17 LMU 8
Alexandros Athymaritis opened the game with a goal in the first minute. UC San Diego scored the next three goals to end the period.
LMU opened the second quarter with Blazo Mitrovic first goal of the day, before the Tritons ended the half with the next two.
The two teams traded the first seven goals of the second half with Alex marlow, Mitrovic and Athymaritis all add to the score line.
LMU dominated the Tritons in the fourth period, Mitrovic starting the quarter with a goal and Milan Sarkadi and Scarlet kai scoring the last two of the match.
Jeff Muller played all 32 minutes in the cage, making four saves.
Game 2: UC Irvine 13, # 17 LMU 12
Jonny rimlinger opened the game with a goal in the afternoon session. After UC Irvine equalized the game, Jack Baumgardner pushed LMU back into the lead with 4:20 left in the opening period. The Anteaters scored the next two before Rimlinger tied the game at 3 with 2:32 on the clock. The UCI scored the last two goals of the first quarter to take the lead 5-3.
Daniel Roth reduced the deficit with the first goal of the second quarter, before Irvine converted the next two. Blazo Mitrovic and Alexandros Athymaritis each scored one goal to reduce the deficit to 7-6. The Anteaters scored with 1:51 left until halftime, but Mitrovic scored with his goal at 1:04.
After UC Irvine opened the third quarter with one goal, Rimlinger scored two goals one minute apart to tie the game at 9-9 with 4:56 on the clock. The UCI resumed its lead before the last period, 10-9.
A goal from Athymaritis in LMU’s first possession in the fourth quarter made it a game at 10. The ‘Eaters scored the next three goals before Rimlinger and Mitrovic responded with one goal each to make it a game of. a goal with 47 seconds left. LMU couldn’t shoot his final possession, making it a 13-12 final.
LMU will close the tournament against # 18 Pomona-Pitzer at 10:00 a.m.
