Battlefield 2042 will not have voice chat at launch
Battlefield 2042 introduces a 32-player tactical mode called Hazard Zone, which I described as “Escape From Tarkov Lite” in my first impressions of BF2042. It’s a squad-against-squad race to acquire randomly scattered data discs and escape alive. Communication seems vital in a mode like this, so it’s slightly surprising that there isn’t a squad VOIP system in Battlefield 2042 at this time.
Voice chat is coming “ASAP,” according to EA, but for launch, DICE assumes coordinated teams will communicate in Discord or other stand-alone chat apps.
That’s a fair assumption for people who are friends outside of the game, but those who queue up solo in a four-player squad in Hazard Zone will have to settle for text chat, chat menu. fast (you can ask for ammo, healing, etc.), and the built-in ping system, which leaves a lot to be desired. I found it easy to miss an enemy’s body when trying to ping, accidentally highlighting a location instead of warning my team of incoming enemies.
To some extent, however, pinging is inefficient by design, as BF2042 distinguishes between pinging an enemy’s last location seen, which any player can do at any time, and marking an enemy, which requires the SOFLAM gadget or another marking tool, such as a remote-controlled drone carried by one of the specialists.
Generally speaking, I like this distinction. “Recon” usually means “sniper” or “stealth assassin” in games, as they don’t actually include meaningful reconnaissance tools, or the recognition itself doesn’t make sense in the game. Conquest mode of Battlefield 2042 this week, however, I had a great time collecting aids by scanning enemy troop movements with SOFLAM, giving the airborne gunners on my team targets to point their cannons at. With this HUD-based reconnaissance role, no commander and less need for coordination than in, say, Rising Storm, the lack of built-in voice chat in Conquest isn’t a big deal. (I don’t think I’ve used the built-in team voice chat in a Battlefield game before.)
For the more calculated Hazard Zone maneuvers, however, teams trained in matchmaking are going to feel at a disadvantage against Discord four stacks until voice chat is added. (The gif above is admittedly a bad example of a calculated maneuver.)
I’m not sure why voice chat wasn’t included at launch, but I have to imagine it sounds like a giant canker sore for developers and publishers right now. Poor voice chat behavior is frequently cited as something that keeps players away from multiplayer games, and no one likes to be told to “just cut it,” which means excluding themselves from fun and useful tactical discussions to make games. make way for idiots. Riot now records all of Valorant’s in-game voice chats so it can effectively investigate reports.
I’m not sure exactly how Battlefield 2042’s voice chat moderation will work when added (although voice chat abuse will be reported), or even whether or not omitting it at launch had anything to do with issues. of moderation. We’ll start to find out how important his absence is or not this weekend.
For EA Play Pro subscribers who have pre-purchased the Special Editions, Battlefield 2042 releases this Friday, November 12. It will be released on November 19 for all others. We don’t have a review yet, but I got to play it a bunch earlier this week. It’s a bit janky as expected, but I love it so far. I’ll post a full review with our final verdict next week after spending more time blowing up helicopters and blowing myself up in helicopters.
